Ear Pressure Sore, Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis (CNH)

Ear Pressure Sores…

One of the most horrible experiences that I went through is when my grandmother got bed sores on her ears. This is something that I had never seen nor have I experienced before. I was not sure how a person can get sores on their ears? When I asked the doctor about it. He informed me that the ear sores where called “Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis”, know as CHN, a sentence I had a hard time pronouncing at first.Good thing CNH  is used for short.

Looked up the word on the internet, but I could not find that much useful information. So I felt very helpless. Later on, I was able to gather additional details about CNH from brochures that physician had gave me, and some information in the book I had been reading,  Prevention of Pressure Sores  (mentioned in my previous post,The Truth as a Caregiver).

As I read articles, I learned that an Ear Pressure Sore, Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis (CNH),occur mostly around the rim of the area. The second location a pressure sore could develop is within the ear, an area called the Antihelix. My grandmothers’ outer ear is what caught my attention at first. It turned red, and i didn’t look normal. At the same time, she was complaining of pain. There is a lack of products out there that help prevent or heal CNH (Chondrodermatitis Nodularis Helicis).

Here are some tips that I felt were helpful When Dealing with Pressure Sores On the
Ear. Please consult your health care professional to see what they recommend for you or your loved one.

It can be very painful and serious if it is not treated promptly.

  1. Keep pressure off the ear while your loved one is laying or sleeping unless there is a medical reason for them to sleep on it. CNH ear support pillow has worked very well.
  2. Rotate the patient from side to side. Preferably every hour, which I felt had worked best in my grandmother’s situation.
  3. Apply a bed sore treatment creme on the rims of the ear. It could be very helpful in relieving some of the discomfort. Ask you health care professional for prescription ointment or and OTC recommendation.
